Why Dance？┃なぜ踊り？
Dance is a universal language. Dialogue begins when we dance together.
Dance has the power to connect people beyond differences in language, nationality, and culture.
At NIPPON, we believe that when people dance together, dialogue begins.
This belief comes from our real experiences in international cultural exchange.
Through collaborations with dance and music companies from around the world, we have witnessed both the beauty and the challenges of bringing different cultures together.
In 2023, we launched the Asia Awa Odori Team to participate in
the Koenji Awa Odori Festival.
What began as a small attempt with just five dancers from three countries soon created something unexpected.
The rhythm of Awa Odori is simple.
Move the right hand and the right foot together.
Within minutes, smiles began to spread.
People who had never met before naturally started dancing together.
Eventually, the team grew into more than 100 dancers from 13 Asian countries.
There were moments when cultural differences created tension or misunderstanding. Yet through dialogue and shared movement, the dancers chose to stand on the same stage.
On the day of the festival, dancers from across Asia performed together with smiles and vibrant energy. Some audience members later said they felt they had witnessed a small moment of world peace.
This experience showed us that traditional dance and festival culture can create dialogue and mutual understanding across borders.
Dance allows people to meet not as strangers, but as human beings moving to the same rhythm.
■Asian Smiles – The Beginning of a New Cultural Dance Exchange
The dancers of the Asia Awa Odori Team came from many different cultural backgrounds, yet on the day of the festival the stage was filled with smiles.
Watching them dance together, I felt something strongly.
In February 2026, a dancer from Thailand who had participated in the project contacted me.
They were organizing a memorial event in Yoyogi Park to honor the late Queen Sirikit and asked whether dancers from other Asian countries might participate.
I proposed an idea:
each country could present its traditional dance, perform together, and finally invite the audience to join in dancing Awa Odori.
Although it began as a small volunteer initiative, dancers from Myanmar, China, Thailand, and Japan gathered to perform a memorial dance together.
＜NIPPON Exchange Stage＞
The performance was titled “Asian Smiles.”
The team was named Asian Folk Dance Ensemble.
Through the Asia Awa Odori project, a new form of cultural dance exchange has begun to grow.
The Asian Folk Dance Ensemble is still a small seed, but we hope to nurture it and let it grow into a meaningful cultural exchange project.

踊りは世界の共通言語。 共に踊るとき、対話が始まる。
踊りには、言葉や国籍、文化の違いを越えて人と人をつなぐ力があります。
NIPPONでは、人は共に踊るとき、対話が始まると信じています。
この考えは、国際文化交流の現場での実体験から生まれました。
世界各国の舞踊団や音楽団体との協働の中で、私たちは異なる文化が出会うことの素晴らしさと同時に、その難しさも目の当たりにしてきました。
2023年、私たちは東京の高円寺阿波おどりへの参加を目指し、アジア各国の舞踊手による「アジア連」を立ち上げました。
最初は3カ国5名から始まった小さな試みでした。
しかし阿波おどりのステップを共に体験すると、思いがけない変化が起こりました。
リズムはとてもシンプルです。
右手と右足を一緒に出す。
すると数分もしないうちに笑顔が広がり、それまで出会ったことのなかった人々が自然と一緒に踊り始めました。
やがてチームは、アジア13カ国、100名を超える舞踊手へと広がりました。
その過程では、文化の違いから生まれる誤解や緊張もあり、相互理解の難しさを感じる場面もありました。
それでも対話を重ね、同じリズムで体を動かす中で、舞踊手たちは共に舞台に立つことを選びました。
祭の当日、アジア各国の舞踊手が同じ舞台で笑顔とエネルギーに満ちた演舞を披露しました。
観客からは「ここに小さな世界平和を見た」という声も寄せられました。
この経験は、伝統舞踊と祭文化が国境を越えて対話と相互理解を生み出す力を持っていることを、私たちに教えてくれました。
踊りは、人を「見知らぬ他者」としてではなく、
同じリズムで動く人間として出会わせてくれるのです。
■アジアの微笑 ― 新しい舞踊交流の芽生え
アジア連の舞踊手たちは、それぞれ異なる文化背景を持つ人々でした。
しかし祭の当日、舞台には自然と笑顔があふれていました。
その姿を見ながら、私は強く感じました。
いつか、各国の伝統舞踊を紹介しながら、踊りが響き合い、
やがて一つの祝祭のように溶け合い、
最後には観客も一緒に踊る舞台を創ってみたい。
■2026年2月、アジア連に参加していたタイの舞踊手から連絡がありました。
前年に逝去されたシリキット王太后を追悼するイベントを代々木公園で開催するので、アジアの舞踊手にも参加してもらえないか、という相談でした。
私は提案しました。
各国の舞踊手がそれぞれの伝統舞踊を紹介し、共に踊り、最後には観客も一緒に阿波おどりを踊る舞台にしてはどうだろうか。
それはボランティアによる小さな企画でしたが、
ミャンマー、中国、タイ、日本の舞踊手が集まり、皇后を追悼する舞を共に踊ることになりました。
舞台のタイトルは「アジアの微笑（Asian Smiles）」
チーム名はAsian Folk Dance Ensemble
■アジア連をきっかけに、新しい舞踊交流の活動が生まれ始めています。
Asian Folk Dance Ensembleは、まだ芽生えたばかりの小さな種です。
これから大切に育てていきたいと願っています。
