私は幼い頃から舞踊を学び、10代後半より指導者としての活動を開始しました。現在の活動の原点となったのは、三つの経験です。

I began studying dance in my early childhood and started my career as an instructor in my late teens. My current activities are rooted in three pivotal experiences.

「踊りを見せに行くのではない。日本と中東の未来をデザインしに行くのだ。」1985年、戦火の続く湾岸諸国への派遣公演で、同行スタッフから掛けられたこの言葉が、私の舞踊観を根底から変えました。

“In this tour, we are not simply showing dance.
We are going to design the future between Japan and the Middle East.
” These words, spoken during a 1985 cultural mission to the conflict‑torn Gulf region, transformed my understanding of what dance can be.

二つ目は、黒澤明監督の映画『夢』において舞踊指導として1年間制作に関わった経験です。

Second was my year-long involvement as a dance consultant for director Akira Kurosawa’s film Dreams.

監督からは細部に渡り細かい指示があり、撮影は大変な緊張間の中で進みますが、監督のカット！の声と共に、監督は出演者や、Staffに笑顔でありがとう！と声をかけます。その姿に偉大な作品が生れる種子を発見した思いです。

The production moved with intense tension, guided by the director’s meticulous instructions for every detail. Yet, the moment he called “Cut!”, he would turn to the cast and crew with a smile and a heartfelt “Thank you!” In that gesture, I discovered the “seed” from which great masterpieces are born.

■国際的な舞踊・音楽家との出会い
世界70ケ国を越える舞踊団、音楽団体の演出経験をもつ布施谷貞雄氏との出会いです。
来日する舞踊手、音楽家の多くが、芸術省・教育省、観光省、外交省、防衛省所属の公務員。国家戦略の達成を目的に芸術活動をする専門家でした。日本との違いに本当に驚きました。
現在、布施谷氏は私たち舞踊団の芸術監督として、 舞踊活動の理念や方向性を示してくださっています。 私たちは、その指標を基軸に、国際的に普遍性のある活動を目指しています。

One of the most influential encounters in my work was meeting Mr. Sadao Fuseya, who has directed dance and music companies in more than 70 countries. Many visiting artists were public officials working in ministries such as Culture, Education, Tourism, Foreign Affairs, and Defense—professionals engaged in the arts as part of national strategy. This stark contrast with Japan’s cultural policy left a deep impression on me.
Mr. Fuseya now serves as the Artistic Director of our ensemble, guiding our philosophy and direction. His vision forms the foundation of our internationally oriented activities.

■国際招聘公演への参加と団体設立
布施谷貞雄氏との出会いをきっかけに、 私自身も世界30カ国を超える招聘公演にプロデューサーとして参加してきました。 各国の舞踊家・音楽家と共に舞台を創り上げる経験は、 私の活動の視野を大きく広げるものとなりました。
そして2005年、 Dance is a universal language. Dialogue begins when we dance together. （踊りは世界共通の言語。踊ると対話が始まる） をテーマに、民族舞踊聚団NIPPONを設立しました。
海外公演・海外における大学における日本文化講座（国際交流基金・民主音楽協会の派遣事業）を通し、交流・対話・相互理解を促進する機会に恵まれてきました。

Inspired by this encounter, I participated as a producer in international touring productions across more than 30 countries. Creating performances with artists from diverse cultures greatly expanded my perspective.In 2005, I founded Japan Folk Dance Ensemble NIPPON, under the theme: “Dance is a universal language. Dialogue begins when we dance together.” Through overseas performances and Japanese culture lectures at universities abroad, I have been fortunate to foster dialogue, exchange, and mutual understanding.

■プロジェクトの公的評価
私たちが取り組んでいる アジア連／アジアの微笑み／未来ラボ！祭×SDGs の3つのプロジェクトは、2026年に大きな評価をいただきました。
・2026年3月 国際的な平和構築研究機関である Min-On Music Research Institute（民音研究所） の Music in Peacebuilding Hub Directory に、日本の団体として初めて掲載されました。
・2026年5月 文部科学省・環境省が設置する政府機関 ESD活動支援センターの公式サイトに掲載され、 国内の公的機関からも正式に紹介されました。
これらの掲載は、私たちの活動が 国際的にも国内的にも、平和構築・多文化共生に資する取り組みとして認められた証です。

Our three projects—Asia-ren, Asian Smiles, and Mirai Lab! Festival × SDGs—received significant cognition in 2026.
・March 2026: Listed as the first Japanese organization in the Music in Peacebuilding Hub Directory by the Min-On Music Research Institute.
・May 2026: Featured on the official website of the ESD Activity Support Center, a government-affiliated institution.
These acknowledgments affirm that our work contributes to peacebuilding and multicultural coexistence.

■プロジェクトの原点
2023年、コロナ終息が公表された直後、社会には大きな不安と断絶が残っていました。 その状況を少しでも改善したいという思いから、私は アジア連（阿波踊りTeam） を設立しました。
最初は 3カ国5名 という小さなスタートでした。 しかし、活動の理念に共感した 駐日大使館で広報活動を担う舞踊手たちが参加し、 現在、13カ国・300名 に広がる Wa（和・輪・環）になりました。

2023, after the official announcement of the end of COVID-19, society still faced anxiety and division. To help heal these fractures, I founded Asia-ren (Awa Odori Team).
What began with 5 members from 3 countries has grown into a network of 300 members from 13 countries, including dancers working in embassy public relations. This expanding circle embodies the spirit of Wa—harmony, connection, and community.

■プロジェクト紹介
Ⅰ）アジア連 ┃ 阿波踊りを通して多文化共生を推進し、 異なる文化背景を持つ人々が“Wa（和・輪・環）”でつながる国際コミュニティを育む取り組み。

project that promotes multicultural coexistence through Awa Odori, fostering an international community where people of diverse cultural backgrounds connect through the spirit of Wa (harmony, circle, connection).

Ⅱ）アジアの微笑み｜Asian Smiles
多様な文化が対話し、共に学び、共に創ることで、 相互理解と共生を促進する国際交流プロジェクト。

An international exchange project where diverse cultures engage in dialogue, learn together, and create together, promoting mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence.

Ⅲ） 未来ラボ！祭×SDGs ┃ 阿波踊り体験を通して、 共生社会の価値・SDGs・ESD（持続可能な教育）を学ぶ体験型プログラム。

An experiential learning program using Awa Odori to explore the values of a coexistent society, SDGs, and ESD (Education for Sustainable Development).

■海外に届いた「日本文化の包摂性」
先日、日本文化の包摂性は海外でも通じるのかを確かめたいという思いから、 ロサンゼルス・ドジャースへ、応援メッセージとして短い動画を送りました。

すると、ドジャースから次のような返信が届きました。
“Hi Tokiko, Thank you for reaching back out! We have shared your email with our Marketing team for assistance. Thank you for your patience and interest!”
このメッセージは、日本文化の持つ“包摂性”が海外のプロスポーツ組織にも響いたことを示す、 大きな励ましとなり、 私たちが目指すテーマ～Dance is a universal language. Dialogue begins when we dance together.に希望の灯りとなりました。

To explore whether the inclusiveness of Japanese culture resonates abroad, I sent a short support video to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Their warm reply affirmed that our message had reached them, and it strengthened our belief in the universal power of dance.

■結びに
舞踊文化は本来、社会を支える大きな価値を持つものです。 舞踊が「趣味」や「娯楽」にとどまらず、 平和で持続可能な社会の基盤として生かされることを願い、 これからも活動を続けてまいります。
私ひとりの力では成し得ることは限られています。
皆さまと共に学び、共に創り、共に歩む 共創・協働の輪が広がっていくことを、心より願っております。

Dance culture holds profound social value. I hope that dance will serve not merely as entertainment, but as a foundation for a peaceful and sustainable society. This journey cannot be taken alone.
